Thiago Mendes (Instituto PACS) portrays Mônica Lima — Tripuira Kuaray, “the bird who sings at dawn” — an indigenous woman of the Manaú ethnic group of the Arawak people whose activism crosses multiple fronts. The text follows her defense of the Aldeia Maracanã, the urban indigenous village left to ruin beside the stadium and violently dismantled by police in 2013, and exposes the restrictions imposed on the community in the lead-up to the mega-events. Beyond the indigenous cause, the author maps Mônica’s struggles as a health professional defending the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, as a prison educator removed from her post through politically motivated persecution, and as a researcher sued by ThyssenKrupp CSA after studying the steel mill’s health impacts on the people of Santa Cruz — drawing together a portrait of resistance against the “steamroller” of the city of mega-events.
