Instituto Pacs presents the study BRICS in Africa: more of the same?, which investigates how companies from emerging countries operate across the African continent and questions the bloc’s capacity to build a counter-hegemonic alternative from the Global South. Coordinated by Pacs and developed by professor Ana Garcia, with the help of Bárbara Dias and Yasmin Bitencourt, and financed by Oxfam Brazil, the research compares the Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) signed between the five BRICS nations and African countries, maps the main foreign direct investments by sector and company, and analyzes the international arbitration cases involving these corporations. The study concludes that, driven by a logic of competition over natural resources and market access, the BRICS reproduce practices that are imperialist in nature, bringing colonialism back to Africa in modern times.
